Nature Guys

Step outside and stay awhile

Waves and Beaches with Kim McCoy

May 18, 2021 by Lisa 3 Comments

Charles Van Rees, Nature Guys Podcast’s very own science guy, has a fascinating conversation with Kim McCoy about Kim’s new book Waves and Beaches: The Powerful Dynamics of Sea and Coast by Willard Bascom and Kim McCoy published by Patagonia.

Kim mentions salmon in the conversation. To learn more about salmon, check out Bob’s interview with Mark Kurlansky in the episode Salmon are a Gift about Mark’s book Salmon: A Fish, the Earth and the History of Their Common Fate also published by Patagonia.

I have noticed on an ice covered but thawing lake that water on the shore at the edge of the ice is “breathing” in and out on a fairly calm day. I can provide a video of you want. What is this phenomena?

Charles answering:Depending on the size of the lake and the frequency of the in and out they’re seeing, this could definitely be seiching (I think that’s how its spelled) which we discussed in the podcast episode.

Just heard this episode of Nature Guys last night, and I’m so excited. I read Willard Bascom’s “Waves and Beaches” several years ago, and absolutely loved it. As Charles pointed out, many (most?) nature enthusiasts tend to focus on the biota of the environment, but I’ve always been fascinated by its physical aspects. I just ordered the updated book, and am looking forward to getting lost in the currents, waves and sands while I read it on the beach. Thank you, Kim McCoy, for revisiting this great work!
