Gia and Bob just cannot let go of the 17 year cicadas. They discuss a very cool bird the Yellow-Billed Cuckoo that has a special taste for cicadas.
Special thanks to photographer Richard Payne for allowing us to share this amazing yellow-billed cuckoo picture taken at Cincinnati Park’s Magrish Riverlands Preserve.
Check out this great YouTube video from our listener Deb of a common European cuckoo in Rhode Island (see the details in her comment):

Loved your Cuckoo episode. Such a cool bird that many people don’t know about. Last year a European Common Cuckoo was found in the small state of RI. I did a video for the local nature video contest about its visit. It’s on my YouTube channel the link is https://youtu.be/vw5XeXrTci4
Thanks for the episode.

We had a great time doing this! Glad you liked it.

Great episode. I never knew they were a bird species I might see around me, or I should say hear. I think you should definitely do a mushroom series, I have all types in my yard this year, even two varieties of…..inappropriate look ones. But still cool to see
Bob
Hope you are lucky enough to see one! Thanks for your vote for mushrooms.

Really enjoyed the Cuckoo episode and too think that I have heard the bird in the woods but have never seen one. I am also excited about the possibility of an episode on fungi. Their beauty is underrated. I recently launch a blog, Footpathsblog.com that is about hiking and nature. A recent post involved a hike at The Edge of Appalachia Preserve in Adams County, Ohio, and a good part of it was about the fungi that we saw. Here is the link.

The Edge is a great place to hike and your blog is wonderful! Hope people take the time to check it out. – Bob

Hi,
First time listeners and just wanted to say I really enjoyed the Cuckoo episode.
I took a listen to what they sound like and you were right when you said it’s a sound us mid westerners have heard before. Definitely heard that call before that sounds like a car but never physically seen the bird.
I’m an birder in Northern Kentucky and love doing what I can for the environment and learning more/ enjoying it.
I guess because I’ve listened to some environmental podcasts, the iPhone podcast app recommended yours to me and I’m glad it did.
Look forward to hearing more!
Bob
Glad you enjoyed the episode! Nice to know you checked out the sound! We now have close to 200 episodes so I hope you enjoy them all! Take care, Bob
